AI Skill: Text generation
The Scenario: Tonight’s dinner becomes breaking news. AI writes a funny reason why it’s newsworthy, then gives your child an intro, a set of interview questions, and an outro, ready to interview a family member on camera or into a microphone.
What you need
- ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini (free versions all work fine)
- A phone or tablet to record on, or just to read from live
- A child old enough to read the script themselves
- Someone willing to be interviewed
How to do it
- Decide the “news story” (something small and everyday: what’s for dinner, a missing sock, who ate the last biscuit), who’s being interviewed, and your child’s age.
- Open the AI app and paste this prompt:
Write a “breaking news” interview script for a [child’s age]-year-old reporter. The news story is: [news story, e.g. tonight’s dinner is tuna pasta bake]. The person being interviewed is [nickname or relation, e.g. Mum, who is cooking it].
Invent a funny, exaggerated reason why this is breaking news, in the style of a serious news report about something silly. Then write: a short intro for the child to read to camera, 5 interview questions for the child to ask, and a short outro sign-off.
Keep the language simple enough for a [child’s age]-year-old to read aloud confidently. Match the tone to the child’s age — for younger children keep it simple and excited, for older children lean more into the deadpan seriousness of treating something small as a huge story.
- Read through the script first and check the questions make sense for your household.
- Hand your child the intro, questions, and outro. Let them practise reading it once before recording, if recording.
- Record it on a phone, or just perform it live for the family.
Good to know
- Use a nickname or just “Mum” / “Dad” / “Grandad” rather than full names in the prompt – there’s no need for real names for this to work.
- If your child struggles to read part of the script, ask the AI to simplify just that section rather than starting again.
Take it further
- Let your child invent the next news story themselves and see what the AI comes up with.
- Encourage your child come up with their own questions.
