The Turing test is a test of whether an AI can produce responses convincing enough that a person can’t tell if they’re talking to a computer or a human.

It’s named after Alan Turing, a British mathematician who proposed the idea in 1950. Passing the Turing test doesn’t mean an AI is thinking or intelligent in a human sense — it means its responses were convincing enough to fool the person judging them.
