Hello, and welcome to the first Raising Generation AI email.

The idea is simple: a few useful things each week, kept short, for busy parents.

Here’s this week’s.

This Monday on the podcast

This week’s question: will our kids ever learn to drive?
Or will all the cars drive themselves by the time they’re old enough?

With driverless cars being trialled on UK roads it felt like the right time to talk about this on the show. Holly and I are joined by Dr Nick Reed to work out what’s real now and what’s still a long way off. Dr Nick’s company Reed Mobility helps driverless car companies bring their technology to the UK in line with regulation, so he really knows his stuff.

It’s on YouTube, Spotify and Apple from Monday morning.

This weekend’s AI activity

Make your child their own colouring page, of whatever they’re obsessed with right now. Dinosaurs, mermaids, one very specific kind of digger. Whatever it is, you can create a one-off page and print it in a couple of minutes.

There’s a step-by-step guide over on our blog – with a handy pdf download.

Do let me know how you get on by sharing the results on our Instagram or Facebook pages. I want to see the good, and the bad!

One AI thing worth knowing this week

Last Friday, the G7 countries, including the UK, agreed their first shared plan for keeping children safe online.

Essentially what they have said is that they want apps and AI tools built with children’s safety in from the start, proper age checks, and more help for kids to spot misleading content. Which seems like a pretty sensible idea to me.

The bigger news for UK parents is what comes next. A government consultation just closed on ideas like limiting social media for under-16s, curfews, turning off endless scrolling, and stronger parental controls. A decision is expected soon, so I’ll update you when that comes in.

What all this means for you: nothing to do today. But changes to what your children can access online may be coming, so it’s worth knowing about.

Over to you

What’s the one AI question you keep wondering about? Hit reply and send it to me. I read every reply, and your questions decide what we cover on the show.

See you Monday, Fiona
